“Where are we going?” I asked a week and a half later as we drove through the gates. I practically bounced in my seat because this was our first date away from Westhorne. Until now, we had only met in the woods and at my house. There weren’t a lot of places to meet secretly at the stronghold.

Ronan cast an amused glance in my direction. He hadn’t told me anything except to meet him at the garage at noon. It was Saturday, so there were no classes, which meant we had the whole afternoon to ourselves.

“Boise,” he said at last.

“Really?” I couldn’t have sounded more excited if he’d said we were going to Disney. “Where in Boise?”

He shrugged. “I thought we would drive around and see what appeals to us.”

“That sounds like fun.” I settled back happily in my seat, and we talked about things to do in Boise.

“Can I ask you something?” I said during a brief lull in the conversation.

“You can ask me anything.”

I turned slightly in my seat to face him. “That day I first met you in the woods, you ran so fast. And when you fight you move a lot faster than my aunt who is ten years older. Is it because of your wolf?”

He smiled at the mention of that day. “Yes, but I wasn’t always fast. It took me years to learn how to tap into my wolf’s strength and my Mori’s strength at the same time. And I can’t do it when I’m in my wolf form.”

“Because your Mori is dormant then,” I said.

“Yes.”

I fell quiet at the reminder he couldn’t sense my Mori in his wolf form. I ran with his wolf every night, and sometimes, we sat together for a while in our little spot at the lake. He was affectionate and playful, but he showed no signs of imprinting on me.

“You’re fast, too. I’ve seen young warriors who couldn’t catch you in a foot race,” he said.

“One of the perks of being half Fae,” I joked. “Speed, stealth, and the ability to kill vampires with a touch. I’m still working on the last one.”

He looked over at me. “You’ve fought more than one?”

“A few,” I said reluctantly. I’d told him about the vampire in the alley, but not about the two in the parking garage or the one after that. Eldeorin had taken me for two more sessions since the night we went to Blue Nyx. During the last session I’d killed a young vampire with my magic, but it was far from a perfect kill.

Ronan turned his attention back to the road. “When?”

“During some of my lessons with Eldeorin,” I said before I noticed Ronan’s tight jaw. Mom had told me this would happen. Males felt the bond more strongly, and it made them overly protective.

I reached over and touched the hand gripping the gear shift. “Eldeorin trained my mother in the same way, and she made him my godfather. Do you think she would have
